Govt. used Digana violence to divert attention: Wimal

Joint opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday MP Dilum Amunugama had requested Central Province (CP) DIG to provide security in the Digana area following the death of the youth, but the DIG had rejected it saying the situation was under control.

"MP Amunugama had told the DIG that the people feared a serious situation occurring in the area and had requested him to provide security but the request was rejected on the basis that the situation is under control," he said.

Mr. Weerawansa told parliament that the government had intentionally neglected to bring the situation under control so as to suppress the burning issues of the people.

"When people resorted to violence in an organised manner, the government turned a blind eye because it was an excuse to suppress burning issues. The government wanted to suppress issues such as anarchy after the local government election, crisis in the UNP over the premiership and the UNHRC sessions," he said and added that STF and Police personnel had reached Digana so late leaving room for violence.

"If the government failed to act at the proper time, people are forced to take the law into their hands. This is the result of the anarchy in the country," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
