Although Rs. 40 million is spent monthly on salary payments for the Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital (NFTH), the government does not intend to operate the hospital as a traditional government facility, Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
He made these remarks during an inspection of the NFTH this morning.
The Minister said that the government plans to develop the hospital under a new model, taking into account both international and local circumstances, while leveraging the talent and skills of the hospital administration.
During his visit, the Minister explained that the government aims to position the country as a major hub for health tourism. He also highlighted the potential of the Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital to incorporate indigenous medicine into its services as part of its development strategy.
The hospital has a capacity of 1,002 beds, with 800 beds currently in use. Of these, 440 beds are utilised on a daily basis for routine needs.
