Govt yet to decide on future of Chief of Defence Staff post



Colombo, Dec 25 (Daily Mirror) - The government has yet to decide whether to abolish or retain the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) following the conclusion of the current CDS, General Shavendra Silva's tenure.

When asked about the government's plans regarding the future of the CDS role, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that no decision has been made regarding its continuation or abolition.

Minister Jayatissa confirmed that General Silva's term will end on December 31, 2024, and the government is still deliberating on the matter.

General Silva was first appointed as CDS on June 1, 2022, and was re-appointed by then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe on June 1, 2024, for a term lasting until the end of this year.
