HRCSL to support LGBTQ community in advocating legal reforms



The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has expressed its support to the LGBTQ community in protecting its rights as well as advocating for legal reforms over the issues pertaining.

The HRCSL expressed these concerns when a group of representatives of the LGBTQ community met the former to discuss the well-being of the LGBTQ people and address pressing issues on Wednesday.

The representatives presented a request letter to the Chairperson of the HRCSL Justice Rohini Marasinghe, highlighting the issues faced by LGBTQ people that need to be resolved, the HRCSL said in a statement.

The HRCSL has expressed its support to promoting and protecting the rights of LGBTQ individuals including raising awareness, addressing social stigma, fostering inclusivity as well as advocating for legal reforms.

The meeting comes in the wake of a private member’s bill to decriminalize same-sex consensual relationships, which has been filed at the Supreme Court. The group of representatives comprised of individuals and institutions that work and fight for the rights of the LBGTQ community. (Kurulu Koojana Kariyakarawana)
