This appointment was long anticipated and well-deserved. It's encouraging to see individuals with an academic background stepping into the political arena, which has too often been dominated by opportunists, criminals, and incompetents (especially from pohottuwa). Wishing you all the best – the NPP has made a promising start. As they say, well begun is half done, but let’s keep in mind there’s still a long road ahead. Best of luck!

I dont think so. For example, we always had Prof. GL Pieris who was the Spider Man of Sri Lanka politics, able to leap from one (tall) party to another with the greatest of ease over a number of years. I am sure Sri Lanka has it's share of Grade 5 scholarship holders O-Level qualified politicians along the way.

Ravi was exceptional in his rendering of his duties as a Police Officer and resisting overtures by politicians. His minor personal lapse was not when on duty. How many of us have transgressed in such minor ways and even escaped the law. So comments should be objective and not just hurling stones.

karolis Tuesday, 24 September 2024 04:26 PM
What a stupid answer this is. His track record in office is irrelevant. You can't escape crime simply because you are performing well at office. I see this as hypocrisy at best. What would NPP have done if someone else did this?

Suggest you hear about the story of Diogenes the Cynic, who went around the sunlit streets of Athens, lantern in hand, looking for an honest man. He never found one and in Sri Lanka I can bet that would be a fruitless excercise. You are chasing the moon to get one without any lapse.

NPP better tread wisely! If the opposition (SJB, UNP) and others somehow manage to work together just to topple the NPP, and people vote along party lines (they pretty much did that for the just concluded presidential election), the opposition just may manage to get 2/3 of the parliament seats. If that happens, they can move a no-confidence motion against AKD, get rid of him, and elect one of their own as the president. Then, all the hopes of, and efforts by, the suffering masses will come to nought! NPP, tread wisely!
5 53
Sunil Tuesday, 24 September 2024 03:35 PM
I don't think you can impeach the President for a certain period 2 or 4 years. Even then it will be not possible to get 2/3 because there will be divisions within opposition and people will find NPP is the best of all political parties. People must look at the person and vote. Don't elect fraudsters, rapists and murderers.

Know the Constitution - not wild guess. The president will appoint a member of parliament as prime minister, who, in the president's opinion, "is most likely to command the confidence of Parliament". At the next meeting of Parliament, the New PM can be voted in or out by majority if there is disagreement. That is how Ranil was "appointed" by Gota and endorsed by SLPP rogues in Parliament.

Please don't overemphasize academics and academic qualifications. They don't necessarily make someone a great person, let alone a great leader. I'm pleased with Harini's appointment as PM, not because she's an academic, but because I believe she is one of the key reasons people saw the NPP (i.e., JVP) as more democratic and no longer a violent group. She helped improve their image through her behavior and conduct as an MP. Even the most aggressive MPs in parliament rarely said anything negative about her, which shows she was respected by most.
0 33
Hassan Tuesday, 24 September 2024 05:09 PM
I don't agree with your thoughts, even if NPP is not formed JVP would win. Many people didn't know the concept of NPP, like many people from Kandy , badulla they didn't see NPP as different and they voted a corrupt free leader. Their choice was AKD not NPP. So even in parliament election people will get votes because of AKD not just they are NPP. People didn't care about NPP they saw AKD as an alternative. You have to have some common sense, they were deprived of others so need a change and voted for AKD. If she was not in parliament through national list no one would know her. But when it comes to PM post, it's not merely PhD that would make it as a qualifications. So either Vijitha Herath or Nalinda would be more suitable in next election. Even if Harini gets more votes it will be because of the votes AKD got in presidential election and people will have to cast it to NPP and not many known so she may get from that vote.
6 2
TKD Tuesday, 24 September 2024 07:54 PM
@Hassen, I respect and understand your view. However, based on what AKD and his NPP/JVP team said before and during the election, their message wasn't about relying on just one person but rather a team and their principles. In the 2015 election, the JVP made a mistake by having their national list MPs resign so that members like Bimal, who lost in the general election, could enter parliament. Even Bimal later admitted this was a mistake, promising it wouldn't be repeated. That decision allowed Harini to take a national list seat in the last election. The original purpose of the national list was to bring in individuals like Harini, who couldn’t get elected directly, into parliament. The JVP deserves credit for upholding this and setting a positive example. Among the candidates, AKD was the most charismatic, but it's evident that Harini and others who supported the NPP wouldn't have done so if they were joining just the JVP and that would have made their campaign less effective.

|My dear Sri Lankans. we have may some different political views and yet now, we all must leave all those differences one side and unite all to build this nation. Parties come and parties go but the national interest of this country is not like party politics. it should be in the minds and heart of each Sri Lankans. In this respect, I appreciate both Ranil and Sajith. Once they knew that they have been democratically defeated they conceded their defeat. I really appreciate Sajith and Namal they came to Orth taking ceremony: you can not expose your personal grudge in your public life. So, let us be united to develop this nation. all must rally around this government to succeed.

I have associated with PM Dr. Harini for the last ten years as my colleague at the Department of Social Studies of the OUSL during her tenure, she made significant contributions to the organization. the creation of new sociology teaching materials, participation in leadership roles in OUTA and FUTA, and assistance in preparing the request to get a competitive grant from the World Bank fund to update the BA program, through the collection of data from the entire island, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya played a spectacular role in the development of the 2014 Youth and Development Sri Lanka National Human Development Report on Youth and Development for UNDP etc. are few examples. She has wonderful relationships with all members of the university personnel, including the students, and always has a grin on her face. Academics is not indicative of their ability to get things done or improve the country. Look at the new government. How many are well groomed, well dressed and present themselves as leaders to the world? They need to take care of themselves first as a reflection of their standards for success and prosperity. Only then it can be believed that they will raise the bar for the country and its people.
