Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - United National Party (UNP) headed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today suggested holding a referendum to extend the term of the President and Parliament for two more years.
The proposal was made by UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara today.
"Extending the terms of the President and Parliament by two more years through a referendum is the best option at this moment to save the nation. The Government has reached agreements with the IMF, World Bank and other donors on economic reforms and it is essential to extend the terms of the President and Parliament to make this exercise a success,. Stabilizing the economy is more important than anything," Range Bandara told the media.
"We propose a referendum to extend the terms of the President and Parliament as it is the most democratic way to do it," he added.

Just hold the Presidential election, which will cost almost the same. If the people want RW to continue, they will vote for him, if not let them choose the suitable candidate.

Fact Tuesday, 28 May 2024 03:33 PM
Most people are not yet mentally evolved to understand the gravity of the decision they make during polling, so they will keep electing people like MR,Gota,My3 and now AKD .hence its better to have RW for another few years since he has proved to Be an effective leader . best to keep a general election and send most of the idiots home

Fact - You surely cannot be from planet Earth. "..since Ranil has proved to be an effective leader" Just mention half an instance when he did that. CoL is so high even the rich are grumbling. No queues for petrol, diesel, food and gas, because prices have gone up by 3 times. Where is the FDI, infrastructure developments especially transport? Rackety rack train compartments and belek buses for people and tourists, no transport from airport other than taxis, whereas others have mono rail, subway, skytrain and fast shuttle trains. Even eggs are imported. So Where exactly did Ranil prove his leadership prowess?

This shows the mindset of UNP. Sense of entitlement. There is a constitution - no one is above it. I don't know whether to cry or laugh at this!

GERIATRIC TAX PAYER SINCE 1975 Tuesday, 28 May 2024 12:10 PM
We cannot starve for further two years. Parliamentarians DO NOT understand that Individual Income Tax Threshold of Rs.100,000 per month is extremely insufficient. So, we do not want them to continue anymore. If you need extension, increase threshold to at least Rs.500,000 per month, effective April 01, 2024. In today's context this is a very fair move.

No provision for a referendum on the Presidential election, in the constitution to play the uncle's lamp pot game to rob. Ranil doesn't care the Constitution. It's a waste of public funds what Ranil disregards.

Well, now all the major political parties are in line with IMF agenda. Even the so called anti-West and rhetoric JVP also is in the same wave length. More than others, they are now on par with Indian agenda also. So, might as well, let the current administration continue for another 2 years instead of wasting billions of Rupees in the name of elections!

Way to reduce dead wood seniors in Parliament Tuesday, 28 May 2024 01:38 PM
Dissolve Parliament and send the entire 225 dead wood home for TWO years. Just calculate the millions, if not billions that can be saved for Treasury. A big part of loans can be settled. A good part of seniors will not contest because they will be dead and gone in two years.

yes , we need this kinds of referendum so that you can save money on unnecessary expenses spent on election thus, allowing you to import vehicles and go on lavish foreign trips, please keep your word on plantation workers wage hike and there are many people turning to defiling jobs just to survive. Please make them occupied by encouraging FDI

Say if you have a referendum and lose, what happens? You go for a presidential election. Who pays for it? Why dont you just have the election followed by the parliamentary election.

He has neither hair nor brain.Does not he know the ground reality it will be wastage of money.First of all Ranil is not an elected represenative of Parliament or an elected executive president to go for a referendum. He came on a Bonus seat after a tug of of war within fellow UNPers.

Whilst there is no provision for a Referendum in the Constitution these are last minute utterances of the dying twins UNP and SLPP. Before these two parties last breath let them be happy that their parties will be written in Golden Letters of history that they destroyed the livelihoods of the public and led the country to bankruptcy !!!!!!!!!!

You go for Referendum you loose then you loose Presidential election and General election, people know what they want, people want to send the President and the government out, if the president and the government doing the correct thing people will vote for the President and the government but that is not the case

This is the clearest indication of who is going to win the 2 elections. The UNP keep saying they are ready for any election and then say this! The truth is, the Pohottuwa and UNP, by now, are well aware that they will both be annihilated in record margins at both elections. So they come up with these nonsensical monkey pranks!

Will save money to find out what public wants Tuesday, 28 May 2024 08:10 PM
Referendum will of course fail. Better to have referendum to shorten the future Presidential term to maximum of 4 years, and Parliament to two years, like US has its President and House of Congress system. Current terms are too long. Anyway, UNP will be thrashed, but idea is good one.

Do not hold any election or referendum Tuesday, 28 May 2024 08:18 PM
Best approach for system change is current lot refuse to hold any election. Refuse to give funds even for Presidential election. It will be up to public to over throw the military and do system change. Rely on Parliament last 50 years has resulted in useless state we are in.

Fortune favours the brave, so let's take a punt and vote in the NPP. Hopefully, they will eliminate at least fifty percent of the corruption prevalent, which has crippled our country in the past 4 decades. What could be worse anyway, be governed by the current mob or bring in a new entity to usher a prosperous era for all of us.
