ICC to rectify match officials’ 'human error': Super Over rule to be implemented in next two matches

(Daily Mirror) - The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sent a notification to its match officials to implement the Super Over rule for the next two ODI matches, if it happens to be a tie at the end of the 50-over match. This was confirmed by one of the top officials.

It was a human error on the part of the match officials who did not implement the rule at the end of the 50-over match which ended in a tie after both teams had levelled the score of 230 runs and the Indian team lost all batters in the 48th over of their innings.

The match officials were under the impression that the Super Over is played only when it is a tournament but the ICC has notified the rule in December last year.

The new rule in force is:

16.3 All other matches - A Tie or No Result
16.3.1 A Tie

If the teams scores are equal after both innings have been completed (if applicable under DLS-see clause 16.4), then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or to complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied.

With the match officials' oversight, it took 149 ODIs for the first tied game at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday.

Match officials should be removed. They cannot shy away from their responsibility.

ICC officials not competent. The last T20 world Cup matches played in USA was totally chaos. Most grounds not adequately had proper covering for most part of playing areas. Unreasonable amount of Games got washed out without a ball being bowled. Very poor organizing.

ICC offered price money for T20 world Cup 2024 $11.25 million whatta joke, coz 5 players in this year IPL combined Made More money than that.

I don't understand why a tie is not a valid result, and needs to be resolved with a Super Over, unless it can't be resolved in which case the tie is OK after all.

I think the Tie is a fair outcome. For example a team A gets 260/7 in at the Completion of 50 overs. There used up the resource with 3 wickets in hand. The other team is all out in the 48th over. They had no more batting resource. Ok it's a tie but give given the resource it's very unfavourable to go for a Super Over. In bilaterals let's call it a tie. In tournaments the same DLS using available resources be used. This in the above example no super over Team A is awarded match points. A super over is if scores are equal with resources to spare at the end of the stipulated overs.
