COLOMBO (Daily MIrror)- The service extension of IGP C.D. Wickramaratne has not been approved by the Constitutional Council and therefore, his service extension is not legal, Opposition MPs claimed in Parliament.

Opposition MP Wimal Weerawansa, while raising a question, said the Constitutional Council has not approved the service extension of the IGP which was given by the President and questioned if his extension was legal.

Weerawansa said there was no legally appointed IGP in the country and that it is a serious matter.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane, who responded said the President was empowered by the Constitution to nominate an IGP and that it was legal and added that the Constitutional Council was in the process of approving it.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the CC approved the service extension of the IGP twice and that his third extension has not been approved and that the CC has observed that it is appropriate to appoint a new IGP.

TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran said there was no IGP in the country according to the Constitution and that it was a serious issue.

He said it is an intentional violation of the Constitution by the President which is an impeachable offence.
