IMF representatives meet NPP leaders

Colombo, Jan. 18 (Daily Mirror)- A group of IMF representatives including head of operations for Sri Lanka, Peter Breuer met representatives of the National People’s Power (NPP) at the JVP head office today.

Ms. Sarvath Jahan, the resident representative of the IMF, Ms. Manavee Abeywickrama (IMF staff) and Peter Brewer, participated in representing the IMF in this discussion.

NPP MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Sunil Hadunnetthi representing the NPP Economic Council, Professor Anil Jayantha, Economic Analyst Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma and National Executive Member of the NPP Muditha Nanayakkara participated representing the NPP.

Sam Silva - The initiative taken was by the IMF and not the other way round. Same goes for a number of foreign embassies who have sought meetings recently with NPP, to clarify their stand on many issues and took up some of their concerns. It is best to view things as they are and not be sceptical as a standard attitude with any body.

A salient fact: “if you don’t borrow, you don’t have to deal with creditors”. We begged the IMF for billions and now we aren’t happy with the terms. Why did we accept the loan ? This is laughable. If India hadn’t come to our immediate aid, people would have been dying in the street whilst the West pontificated. Even at this late stage, when people are clamouring for system change; none of the parties have published a list of candidates disclosing their police check, asset list, educational qualifications, and policy statement. We are destined for a repetition of previous history.

NPP team participated in the discussions are having very good academic qualifications and they have very well understood what the IMF was telling. NPP got to continue with the IMF program with may be some adjustments. Otherwise we may get pushed into a closed type economy where everybody have to face the consequences.
