Imthiaz to be appointed new SJB Chairman

Colombo, July 20 (Daily Mirror) - In what seemed to be a significant change in Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the party is slated to appoint national list MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar as its new chairman in place of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara when contacted by Daily Mirror said party seniors are currently having discussions to this effect.

“We are currently discussing the matter at the moment. It is obvious that we have to appoint a new chairman as Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who held the post since 2020 is no longer with us. Also, there is nothing new in appointing Mr. Bakeer Markar as the chairman as we initially decided to appoint him to the post when we were forming SJB," Mr. Madduma Bandara said.

“The final decision will be made by the working committee, which is expected to meet next week. We are also planning to hold a party convention as well," he added.

Although Sarath Fonseka is appearing to be a very important person who has done lot for the country, the reality is different. SF confronted the very persons who helped him to be in this position today. There are others too sacrified their lives, such as Mr. Denzil Kobbeckaduwa whose struggle is overshadowed due to SF playing the role of a saviour. Besides, some appreciations are also due to Rahul Ghandhi who took the trouble to settlle the score for his Father's murder. When Rajiv was alive with just a phone call he stopped the Vadamarachchi Operation during the regime of JR, headed by late Lalith Athulamudali.
