Income of the Dehiwala Zoo on the rise

Dehiwela, Feb 17 (Daily Mirror) - The income of the Dehiwala Zoo has been on the increase, and it has received an income of Rs. 52 million for the first 40 days of the year from 16,000 visitors.

Director of Operations H.A. Anoma Priyadarshani said the heavy influx of visitors was mainly due to the innovative programmes implemented by the department to attract visitors and the enhanced facilities available to them.

The director said the zoo is open to the public from 8.30 am to 6 pm daily and that they are allowed to watch the activities of animals and to feed the birds, fish, elephants and giraffes only with food supplied by the zoo and under the supervision of employees.

This offers visitors the opportunity to show their kindness to animals and pet them.

The zoo is a cruel repository for animals that are not kept in a species-appropriate manner. The elephants are treated particularly barbarically, as they are chained almost all day.

Make it a sanctuary for these noble creatures, They are not for human entertainment. Educate the kids being in a cage is not a good thing, Every living being deserves freedom.

Good news. I don't know the reasons for the improvement. It is important to recognise that Colombo on the whole have got only very few tourist attractions- Dehiwela zoo one of them. Hence it should target at least 30 % of tourists in Colombo. For this there should be aggressive information on Dehiwala zoo including unique elephant dance shows etc in ALL Colombo and Western Provincial hotels in the way of leaflets at hotel counters. Not visit the zoo recently, but it is vital to have good facilities- restaurants, toilets, signage, clenliness etc.
