Increase in train derailments from 2000 to 2023

Colombo, Jan 28 (Daily Mirror) - There has been an increase in train derailments between 2000 to 2023, according to surveys conducted by the Railways Department.

Accordingly, it has been revealed that train derailments in 2022 and 2023 have doubled compared to 2020 and 2021.

There have been 98 train derailments in 2020, among which 54 have been in railway yards and another 44 on railway tracks.

The number of train derailments in 2021 was 115. There have been 75 derailments on railway lines, and the remaining 40 have occurred in railway yards.

By 2022, the number of train derailments had increased to 133; 94 of them have happened on railway tracks.

Moreover, the department said trains had carried passengers at the time of each derailment

Derailment happen mostly when the condition of the track is not compatible with the speed at which the trains travel on them. The tracks need to be repaired or the trains have to slowed with consequential changes yo journey times. Slow the trains now and carry out repairs over time.

The train journey from Kandy to Badulla has a speed restriction of 15kmh. If I didn’t have luggage, I would walk. What was all the loans and assistance packages to upgrade the railway lines used for ?

The British gave us Pol. The Government gave us Sambol. Unfortunately, during Sirimavos time we had to stand in bread queues from morning till 2-3 pm to get 2 loafs per family ( I kid you not! ). Another forex crisis at the time. Nothing has changed. But it is all Britain’s fault. They should not have given the Gamayas independence.

But China did not have any British but China has the most advanced and luxurious high speed rail network. So how come? It is the British mentality of local people that destroyed the country in 1950s and then the Carl Marx mentality afterwords and then corrupt mentality now.

This year alone there have been derailments almost daily in the upcountry section between Hatton and Badulla.
