Indian businessman arrested at BIA with Rs. 30M in gold

A 29-year-old Indian national was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials at the Katunayake Airport while attempting to smuggle gold biscuits worth approximately Rs. 30 million.

The man, who had arrived from Chennai as a business passenger, was detained at the departure terminal on his way to board a flight to Bangalore.

Upon searching him, CID officers found nine gold biscuits weighing 1.158 kgs and three additional gold pieces concealed in a small bag inside his trouser pocket.

Can a Passenger be searched on Transiting Thru Colombo or any other Airport Or this Pax boarded localky from Colombo Airport

Seems to be a doggie case. Came from Chennai, picked up the cargo in Colombo and try to fly back to Bangalore. Bangalore is not as big as Colombo or Chennai in terms of Customs and so he must have planned to slip out.

Yes. This passenger came to Colombo to fly to Bangaloru, as it is cheap to fly VIA Colombo. If this man has boarded at Colombo, he would have been Sri Lankan passenger and not an Indian passenger. Period.

When you start arresting transit passengers. that too from and to the same country , no one is going to use the BIA as a transit terminal. Sri Lankan AirLines will be blacklisted.

We do not need smugglers as transit passengers. 99% of transit passengers do not do smuggling. We do not mind loosing 1% smugglers.
