Indian couple drowns while bathing at Kirinda beach

Kirinda, June 5 (Daily Mirror) - A foreign national couple has drowned while bathing in the sea off the Kirinda beach, police said.

They said the victims were identified as a 35-year-old male and a 33-year-old female who are Indian nationals.

They were rescued while drowning after being dragged away by strong waves, but died upon admission to the Debarawewa Hospital.

Investigations revealed that the victims were a married couple, and the incident had occurred during a visit to Sri Lanka with their family.

Kirinda Police have launched further investigations into the incident.

Kirinda is a dangerous place for swimming,further the south of Tangalla the tide is high and strong waves.

There needs to be warning signs on the beach or have lifeguards monitoring the swimmable spots to keep people safe. Many don't know much about beach safety if they have not lived near the coast. What kind of wave and tides are dangerous. How strong the current is. When to avoid the water and when it is safe to go in. All these can be visually understood by a trained or experienced person but not otherwise.

Please put some warning notice across the beach in all dangerous areas … we need to protect locals and tourists from this .. Have you ever done any study to know how many people die in sea across Sri Lanka ? Have you ever any study to how many die in rivers ? How many die in lakes and wells ? We are poor in health and safety measures and yet Ranil wants another terms ! NPP will put all right and give them a chance

The beaches around the southern coast definitely need monitoring and Lifeguard protection especially for tourists who sometimes venture out thinking they are strong swimmers but pay the price getting caught in a strong rip tide these beaches are notorious for.What a tragic way to end a holiday losing their lives as our thoughts go out in condolences to the family of this young couple.Their deaths could have been prevented had there been remedial and warning measures available.
