A video has surfaced on social media allegedly showing controversial Jaffna MP Archchuna Ramanathan demanding a hospital official to address him as ‘sir’.
“You have to call me ‘sir’ whether you like it or not. I am a member of Parliament,” the man, whose face is not seen on camera, is heard to be telling the other individual.

We were under the British. The British have given up ‘ sir’ . We in Sri Lanka continue to ‘sir’ others. Abandon it. Address others as, Mr, Mrs, Miss, That’s it.

He is bit crazy! What is wrong in calling him Mr/ Dr Arjuna? This antiquated system of calling someone SIR was instilled in us by the British colonial masters. It is time we throw away these shackles and perhaps call MP's as Comrades.

Thamis, a former Peon of the Ceylon Postal Service was fired and SWRD allowed him to contest under the SLFP ticket. He won and became an MP from Colombo District. One morning inside the Elevator, Thamis met Sir John Kotalawa ( Knighted by King George 6th.) and addressed him as John. Afterall both were just MP's in the same parliament and thought to be equal. If Thamis is still alive, his ear must be still ringing from the slap he received in 1956.

Very valid point. All those who were elected by the citizens to represent and work for them, should address the public as "Sir", Slave I Remain. The citizens are their masters. Not the other way around.

Sokrates Wednesday, 11 December 2024 08:57 AM
I have never addressed anyone as sir in my entire life in Sri Lanka. Anyone who addresses someone with the Old English sir is behaving submissively and has no respect for their own person. Someone who explicitly demands to be addressed as Sir has a pronounced inferiority complex.

That will change when you enter a court of law. You will call the judge accordingly.

Psychiatric Assessment Needed For All Politicians Wednesday, 11 December 2024 09:04 AM
Suggest psychiatric assessments be done on all politicians. Can’t afford psycho representing the citizens. For individuals having inferior complex issues, suggest they don’t take stressful jobs and make a fool out of themselves.

When you can sir politician without any proper qualification as “sir” , why can’t you call him Sir who has got a qualification

Terrence K Wednesday, 11 December 2024 03:14 PM
@Sokrates - Where respect needs to be given it should be given calling a person Sir is not infra dig but shows respect when addressing a person. All those who humble themselves will be exalted and those who exalt themselves will be brought down, but those people who are given this honour should not undermine the other person. I was surprised when you say diabolic lies because if you had gone to school you would have addressed the male teachers as Sirs whilst if the school teachers were females you would have addressed them as Miss. So don't show a facade of pride because you do not know when your downfall is at hand and when the Bell Tolls for you!!!!!

If taken out of context it may look odd. He was exposing corruption in hospitals and because of that he won public support. To expose corruption in Mannar hospital, after a death of a mother just after child birth, he went there but only to be arrested by Police on complaint of tress passing. Now after becoming MP he is visiting hospital and showing that he is back with authority as MP and may be deliberately making this point to indicate to those who prevented his entry before.

KP Wednesday, 11 December 2024 06:08 PM
I don’t think it’s mandatory for an MP to be called ‘sir’. But despite the bravado of commentators here, there are positions that need to be addressed accordingly. A judge is one example.
