Judgment in passport case against Shashi Weerawansa postponed

The Colombo Chief Magistrate today postponed for May 6 to deliver its judgment in respect of two cases filed against Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and former Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

This is over an incident where Mrs. Weerawansa had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

The Court was informed that the predecessor judge who heard the cases have been promoted to the High Court. Accordingly, Colombo Chief Magistrate Chandima Liyanage directed the Judicial Service Commission to appoint the predecessor judge to pronounce the judgment.

The CID had filed two separate charge sheets against Shashi Weerawansa that she had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

The CID had commenced an investigation against Shashi Weerawansa over the charge of obtaining diplomatic and general passports illegally. She had allegedly submitted birth certificate with forged names and dates of birth to obtain those passports. She is currently out on bail.

The court has already concluded recording evidence from both prosecution and defence regarding this incident. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
