Landslide danger in Norton Bridge, school closed

A hill near the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Vidulipura, Norton Bridge, is fa ing the risk of a possible landslide, leading to the temporary closure of the school.

The Principal, Suanthi Malani Kumari, informed the media that the closure was due to recent rockfalls in the area. She explained that the school is located at the foot of a hill that has developed cracks, indicating a potential landslide threat.

The principal added that the decision to close the school was made in consultation with the Zonal Director, and further action will be taken based on his instructions.

It is sad that often landslides in Sri Lanka are considered normal phenomena and left to nature to do its work. It is no doubt it is one of natures way of reducing potential energy. However, there are more than one reason why this phenomena occurs. Sadly, NBRO does not have the real know how to study such failures and control them before it turns into a catastrophe. Often, some simple options such as rerouting surface drainage or providing adequate subsurface drainage or changing the geometry of the slope can control such phenomena. My experience has been that, some combination of the above can often solve this issue.
