Lanka Sathosa slashes prices of 10 essential commodities

Colombo, Dec. 15 (Daily Mirror)- Lanka Sathosa has decided to reduce prices of ten essential commodities from today given the festive season, Lanka Sathosa Chairman Pasanda Yapa Abeywardena said today.

He said prices of Sathosa Milk Powder would be reduced by Rs. 10 (Rs. 940), imported canned fish 425g by Rs.55, imported canned fish 255g by Rs. 10, local canned fish 425g by Rs. 20, imported potatoes by Rs. 15, local potatoes by Rs. 15, red raw rice 1kg by Rs. 15, white raw rice 1kg by Rs. 5 and chickpeas 1kg would be reduced by Rs. 5.

He said eggs would be sold at Rs. 35 each, white sugar at Rs. 275 and big onions would be sold at Rs. 400.

The Chairman said price reduction will be in effect till December 31.

No one cares because no one visits Sathosa outlets anyway. Even if they give away everything for free, no one will come to take them mainly because of the government servant mentality the employees at Sathosa have which reflects in their attitude towards customers. That is the main reason for its downfall.

Does the word "SLASHED" apply here. The items have merely been reduced by a few rupees. Instead of slashed, they could have mentioned as "REDUCED" to convey the true meaning.

Where are the high officials who arrange imports of essential food items? You wait till the last onion is sold, to place new orders from a different country? Even an uneducated housewife knows how to do her purchasing, for quality, cheap items when she goes to purchase her daily needs.

Government still thinks that ordinary Lankans can be fooled. Why dont you apply a percentage like 10, 15 or 20? Your latest price reduction on Sathosa milk powder by Rs.10 equates to 1 ÷95 = 0.1%
