Colombo, September 2 (Daily Mirror) - President Ranil Wickremesinghe called for the support of all parties to create an era where Sri Lanka could end borrowing funds from other countries.
"It is time to put a stop to borrowing. It is time to stop depending on other counties. Sri Lankans should earn the funds that they want to run the nation by themselves," Wickremesinghe told a ceremony held to mark the 73rd anniversary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

What a joke - you yourself made this country a debtor to other donors until 2048 with accumulated interest and to make things worse you boast of negotiating a grace period further complicating the debtor status and you should now be packing your bags instead becoming a laughing stock.

President is correct. Borrowing loans strip us of our pride. Let's continue to sell our country piece by piece and our future generation will not have a country and proudly live as refugees in other countries.

But what has he done in nearly 50 in power? Now that the elections are around the corner, he is utter these and think he can fool people. He is 76 years of age, the age by which most people are retired. How can he turn round a country with huge problems except in words. I am sure by the end of each day his brain is knackered. SL needs a younger leader.

Yes, he rightly said that the second and third preferences, too must be marked, even casting the vote for him, to prevent Anura getting elected as paving the way for Gota part II.

Ranil, why wont you tell the people how much you borrowed during you being PM and President. We learned that these borrowings have reached USD 100.0 billion. Is it true?
5 45
Kevin Tuesday, 03 September 2024 03:10 AM
$102 billion to be precise. It was $87 billion when he became president. This is excluding 17 billion rupees borrowed locally last year (auditor general report) and 60% foreign project loans (Vertie Research). They are hidden. When added up actual borrowings payable will be around $109 billion. Everybody owes $5,000 each. Interest another $325 annually on top.

You and the rest of your ilk are the jokers mate. A leopard cannot change its spots. The NPP/JVP to whom you give your support while ridiculing all the good work being done by the incumbent, are a bunch of marxist thugs. These are members of the university student unions who went about ragging students from the Colombo schools based on pure jealousy. They also physically beat up any undergrad that had a non JVP party registration and thru violence prevented any other political party establishing a union. This will be the last election you participate in if they come to power. All of you will live to regret your attitude but it will be too late.

What are you trying to bluff about now Ranil? Just two weeks ago you announced that there are 18 or so countries waiting to give loans to you indicating that you were all for it! Besides, historically, you led the biggest loan taking programs that eventually contributed to Bankrupting the country. Maybe your memory is fading fast due to senility. Of course, borrowing should have stopped! Not now, but years ago - if you had any workable program to do so as PM. Trying to distort facts now is futile.

Cutting off unnecessary Perks of the Privileged including Politicians. Practicing AUSTERITY..YES. Bring your own refreshments at parties hosted by the leaders, and not forget to bring a biodegradable bag to take away the garbage MENTIONED last but needing the most ,Bring back the loot stored in foreign banks.

RW is the only candidate with positive thinking. The other two main candidates promote a lot of short-term benefits to the people, but can't see any practical long-term solution to get out of the current situation.

And what exactly is his long term solution. Not to take loans as he says and for us to die of hunger. He has himself promised a lot to all and sundry - is that not short term to get votes.

That is 100% correct. But when the government allows major projects on credit, and the local politicians scam the country, we need to borrow from Peter so piyadasa and piyaseeli can survive. So when things at the top get fixed, debt will not trickle down anymore to the citizens.

They borrowed til the country went Bankrupt!! RANIL bragging about IMF funding as if we're getting free money. They were running the country mostly with borrowed money. All successive governments thought borrowing money from IMF world Bank and ADB is an great achievement!! These politicians mortgaged the country for next 50 years.

What a joke is this! What he actually means is let's borrow but not account for it. According to the Auditor General's report over 17 billion rupees borrowed last year is not recorded anywhere. Verite Research (yesterday's news in DM) said 60% of foreign project loans are not updated in the loan portfolio.

Up till now SL politicians depended on massive borrowings from lenders including Bangladesh. But it all gonna change once රතු සහෝදරයන් and AKD comes to power. Under NPP government they're will be some borrowing purely for development projects. Every penny will be utilized and applied to the project.

A forensic audit, if at all possible, of all the foreign aid and loans that came in from 1977 may show how they were spent! From Mahaweli diversion via Finco, to Gamudawa fun and frolics to Defence contracts and after, will show exactly how politicians from the 70s are responsible for the present. They and theirs should have no place in Lankan politics, henceforth, and it is up to the voters to ensure they keep them out, and, for a future government of conscience, to bring wrongdoers to book and ensure sound administrative systems are in place to serve and enable dignified living for all!

You are a big part of the mob who sold the country and future generations to foreign masters from Mahaweli project loan money (it’s a good project what’s bad is how the government handled contracts and corruption) until your last statement. You are a joker and half, had plenty of opportunities to end borrowing and end corruption, instead you kept borrowing and turned a blind eye for corruption! Worst of it you and MR clan got together to cover up corruption from both sides. Your henchmen must declare their assets and how they earned those. Ranil go home after 21st

Yes we should borrowing and rely on ourselves for a better future. But what are we doing about self reliance? Have we increased productivity and developed the export market? We are looking to open new FTZ / EPZ, but have you checked as to what is happening with the current zones we have and how many companies operate in them. But then again the president says with pride that we get over 100m every 6 months from the IMF, ADB and WB.
