Lowest vegetable prices today, high chicken prices

Colombo, Feb 24 (Daily Mirror) - The wholesale prices of vegetables at the New Manning Market in Peliyagoda today recorded lower while bringing down the price of carrots to Rs. 350 per kilo.

Accordingly, the wholesale price of a kilo of tomato was Rs. 450, Beans Rs. 450 and Leeks Rs. 300.

The wholesale price of Capsicum and Green Chillies were a bit higher as Rs. 700 and Rs. 600, while a kilo of ginger was Rs. 1,200.

However, the price of a kilo of fresh chicken was Rs. 1,150; skinless chicken Rs. 1,100 and curry chicken Rs. 1,150.

A kilo of mutton was at Rs. 3,300, and a kilo of beef Rs. 2,300.

Consumers do not buy vegetable in bulk, they buy in Grams so it is common the price of vegetable will always remain high. The middle men purchases in bulk and incurr overheads and sell to the consumers in Grams at higher price to cover all the costs, including labour, transport wastage, etc.

The price we see is more or little less Rs.100 per 250 grms.True in the retail market Rs.125 per 250 gms.That is the price we buy now.Carrots were sold in thousands earlier.An artificial price increase is created for a vegetable from time and good money made as we normally see?? Not the politicians but our own people may be getting together with cultivator and wholesaler /distributor doing this to innocent poor people?

Carrot was a staple diet for Sri Lankan people (who can’t have ‘3 square meals a day’ when it’s was portrayed as 2600/-per kg by proxies of subversives who are overseas! Now that’s it’s less than 500/- a kg , all social media is silent and carrots has become‘foreigners food’ . Now no talks about ‘plastic eggs from India’! Subversives tour of India has done its magic! I visited Delkanda polla, what I observed was all traders have fixed a standard price, a kilo of papaya sold at Rs. 260.00 per kilo, which was so exorbitant, this polla is famous for using chemicals to ripen fruits, I have not seen any PHII or other officials raiding this place, it looks that the local authorities are not bothered.
