MP wants Doctor, Professor titles avoided in House

Parliament, December 17 (Daily Mirror)- MP Dilith Jayaweera proposed in Parliament that titles such as Doctor, Professor etc. should be avoided when introducing MPs in the House as it leads to social division.

He told Parliament that MPs who come from various professions are in the House and that introducing them with titles before them must be avoided.

"A doctor is relevant to hospitals and a Professor is relevant to universities. So, I propose that using their titles in the House be avoided," he said.

Those who do not have titles for example Dilith Jayaweera may not want for MPs to use their titles but those who genuinely obtained titles should be able to use them.

But many are fake or useless titles. Dilith is an accomplished businessman who employs thousands of people. His knowledge and experience is far wider than those fake or book Doctors.

Dilith Jayaweera has a valid point on this. Its not necessary to use the Dr. ,Prof. etc in the Parliament. MPs can use this as a suffix if they want. Dilith Jayaweera is an alumni of Colombo University

Anyone who has painstakingly earned a doctorate also has the right to have it mentioned. The title of professor, which is only awarded, should only be mentioned if the person also has a doctorate. A doctorate does not denote a profession but an academic title. This title can be used in various professions such as phisician, lawyer, pharmacist, zoologist, philosopher and many others. It is also possible to hold a doctorate without practising any profession. It is also a bad habit in the English-speaking world to always refer to a physician as a doctor. Although it is usually the case that a physician has a doctorate, it is not a prerequisite for practising as a physician. It is only necessary to have a degree but not a doctorate.

All MPs are public servants irrespective of their academic titles and qualifications. What matters is their honesty and sincerity in serving the people genuinely. Those with academic titles don't make them any better and superior than those without.

Agree with Dilith, as one cannot Preface an MP with Pre-eminent Trader of Covid-19 Test Kits and Vaccines!!?? Hope soon the Prefix, Mr., Mrs., Ms., Miss. too would be tabooed because it brings about social divide!! Yes, that’s a social division too!!?? Some have and some don’t – whatever, one may adduce importance to!? Then some may be deemed 'pre-used' and/or 'pre-owned' and others whatever happens, there is NO distinction at all!!
