MPs should refrain from insulting judicial officers: Speaker

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today requested members of Parliament not to insult judicial officers during sessions and outside Parliament.

"I would like to request the MPs not to insult the judicial officers and not challenge judgments given in court. An MP could only refer to the conduct of judicial officers through a substantive motion as per Standing Orders. MPs are requested to uphold this Standing Order," he added.

This statement comes days after the Bar Association of Sri Lanka came out with a statement that some MPs have engaged in insulting the judiciary and judicial officers when speaking in Parliament. (Yohan Perera and Ajirh Siriwardana)
