Colombo, July 22 (Daily Mirror)-The Medical Research Institute (MRI), the apex institute which performs laboratory testing, laboratory diagnosis and consultations has come under fire for neglecting a significant number of its testing.
This follows the allegations made by trade unions representing the health sector which claim that 50% of MRI investigations are currently not being performed.
According to the trade unions the Rabies test, Candida Ab ELISA test, Mannan Ag for Candida test, ASOT (Anti-Streptolysin O Titer) test, Brucella PCR test, HbA1C test, ACTH test (adrenocorticotropic hormone), thyroid stimulating hormone test, and the Melioidosis Ab test are not being performed by the MRI.
In response to the allegations, MRI Director Dr Suranga Dolamulla, speaking to Daily Mirror said that the figure as pointed out by the trade unions is outdated and incorrect.
“Previously, 50% of MRI investigations were not conducted, but this figure has now significantly dropped to 20%," he said. He said there is no need to conduct certain tests as highlighted by the trade unions.
"As medical experts, we are aware of which tests are necessary and which are not," Dr. Dolamulla stressed.
"This improvement highlights the implementation of more effective systems and the efficient use of diagnostic resources," he added.
Meanwhile, informed sources said that the MRI is grappling with the allocation of insufficient funds hindering them to perform more testing.
However, the MRI director affirmed that they are prioritizing the most crucial tests.
