’Magen Ratata’ organization chairman calls for probe into Rs. 260 million pilot boat misuse

Sanjaya Mahawatte, Chairman of the 'Magen Ratata' organization, lodged a complaint today (6) with the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission, calling for a fair investigation into a significant financial loss involving a modern, high-tech pilot boat worth approximately Rs. 260 million.

He claimed that the boat was damaged during a private excursion while Ganaka Hemachandra, the current Managing Director of the Ports Authority, was serving as the Resident Manager of the Trincomalee Port.

Mahawatte alleged that Hemachandra misused state property by authorising the use of the vessel for personal purposes and then attempted to cover up the incident. He also accused Hemachandra of spending a substantial amount of public funds to repair the damage.

In light of these allegations, Mahawatte questioned the appropriateness of appointing Hemachandra to a senior position within the Ports Authority and urged the government to take note.

According to Mahawatte, the vessel has been repaired but remains unused since the accident, which he described as a gross misappropriation of state property.

He also claimed that the accident occurred during a recreational trip led by Hemachandra in the eastern seas, in which the son of the former Ports Authority Chairman, General Daya Ratnayake too had participated.

Mahawatte further alleged that the vessel’s regular pilot was replaced with an inexperienced individual for the trip, leading to the accident due to their unfamiliarity with the vessel and the area.

After filing the complaint, Mahawatte emphasised the need to address such misconduct under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative, calling for the removal of officials involved in such actions to restore integrity to the state administration.
