Magnitude 4.6 quake triggers no tsunami warning

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported at a location 310 kms North-East of Batticoloa this morning but did not cause any damages nor was there a threat of a tsunami, the National Tsunami Early Warning Centre (NTEWC) said.

They said the earthquake which struck at 1.29 a.m. local time had a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 in the Richter scale and was located about 310 kilometres North-East of Batticoloa and less than 10 kilometres deep.

Because the earthquake was located so far from land, no damage or casualties are expected. The magnitude of the earthquake was too low to cause a tsunami threat. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
