Mahawansa declared a world heritage

Kandy, July 18 (Daily mirror) - The Ola leaf manuscript of Mahawansa chronical, the main source of history of Sri Lanka in the Peradeniya University Library was yesterday declared a world heritage.

Director General of the UNESCO was the chief guest of the ceremony.

The certificate of declaring the Mahawansa as a world heritage was handed to Chancellor of Peradeniya University Prof. G.H.Peiris by UNESCO Director General.

Vice Chancellor Prof.M.D.Lamawansa presented a memento to the Director General to mark her visit to the university.

University Librarian Dr. M.Maheshvaran was present at the occasion.

The reader is more interested to know the reasons or significance for the declaration of the particular copy of the Mahavamsa at Peradeniya University as a 'world heritage' by UNESCO than showing who and who involved in the presentation.,

We cannot forget the great service of the Late E L B Hurulle former Minister of Cultural Affairs and his team of dedicated officials who initially engaged with UNESCO to recognise the Mahawansa and the 08 World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka in the Cultural Triangle Project and restore our great monuments to its former glory.

Does it mean that UNESCOagrees that Buddha travelled to Sri Lanka three times and Mahinda flew to Mihintale ans gems and gold suddenly appeared at the sea coast that was send to King Ashoka?

That is exactly the reason for asking the reasons for UNESCO to declaration. Is it because the historical significance of the work or as a primary source for studying the history of the Country, or just because this particular copy is old enough? If its, how old, where it was kept before, and when it was compiled? ?
