Mahela Jayawardena resigns as Consultant Coach

Colombo, June 26 (Daily Mirror) - Mahela Jayawardena, who held the position of 'Consultant Coach' at SLC, has resigned with immediate effect, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced today.

In a statement, SLC noted that Jayawardena made significant structural changes during his tenure.

However, the statement did not specify why Jayawardena had resigned, or if it was in the aftermath of Sri Lanka's disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, but stated that Jayawardena had "helped implement significant changes to the structure of the national team ecosystem and the High-Performance Center."

Jayawardena took on the role in December 2021, but his influence had reported reduced after Sri Lanka's poor Cricket World Cup campaign in 2023, with Sanath Jayasuriya appointed to a similar position by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

He was one of the best cricketers that Sri Lanka had produced. He and Sangakkara were a classy pair. But when it comes to management of cricket, he is a utter failure and not in toto with the team and was found wanting. So it was with the Mumbai Indians franchise. It is good that he made his exit to enable a better person to manage the helm of affairs at SLC.

About time! Too many cooks in SLC set up. Only need a good head coach who manage well and 3 specialist assistant coaches for batting, bowling, fielding and a good data analyst. Thats it - just like AFG set up has only few support staff.

Useless and poor consultant. Did not make any impact to the team or slc. Got balled out for less than 75 thrice within short period of time. He destroyed MI gradually now SLC too. He only wants money. We know how he treated Marvan at one of the previous worldcups. Did not give a single match to Marvan while he was captain. That kind of a selfish and greedy for money type person. Look how much he makes but still not enough for him. SLC administration should be sacked too.
