Mahout trampled by elephant during Dodanduwa perahera

An elephant trampled its mahout during a temple procession in the Dodanduwa area of Galle last evening.

The mahout sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Authorities are investigating into the incident.

People should stop using elephants or other animals for their religious or fancy events. The outrage of this elephant is well understood. You put an animal on chains and limit its freedom, then force it to walk on a line like a human, what would you expect other than this..

These wonderful animals should not be used in this manner. From ancient times, they have been exploited for their size and strength. Beasts of burden, they have helped humans in development and progress while also being killed in inhumane ways for the sake of possessing their tusks. Land which is rightly theirs is encroached upon by humans who then attempt to chase them out of their habitat by shooting and electrocuting them. People of Sri Lanka lack intelligence in spite of their ability to read. Just allow these mammals to live in peace, please.

Some say it is a bad sign. NO. The manhunt would have something earlier occasions and elephants wouldn't forget but patiently waiting for a chance to attack. We will PRAY for speedy recovery of manhunt

Stop using animals in all this pomp and pageantry. Would a human like to have chains on his feet, dressed in some hideous garment and dragged through the streets... The elephant would have reacted because he was been ill-treated and humiliated. Perahera can go without the use of animals. Same dragging those poor monkeys through the streets for people's amusement. It is sad and you cannot blame the animal for retaliating.
