Man arrested for defrauding Rs. 50 mn promising student visa in Russia

Katunayake, June 21 (Daily Mirror)- A suspect who defrauded over Rs. 50 million from people around the country, promising student visas in Russia was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night.

He was arrested by the officials of the Negombo Crime Investigation Bureau at the BIA on arrival from Russia.

The suspect, a 32 year-old man from Wattala, Hunupitiya, had sent people from various places in the country on tourist visas while promising them student visas in Russia.

He was arrested following a complaint lodged by an individual at the Negombo Crime Investigation Bureau against the suspect for defrauding Rs. 2.15 million.

Some 17 complaints have been received against the suspect by the Matara police, two complaints by the Kuliyapitiya police, three by the Kurunegala police and one complaint by the Narahenpita police.

Complaints have also been received from Wadduwa, Ampara and Moratuwa police stations.
