Man arrested over Rs. 16mn land fraud with forged power-of-attorney

PANNALA (Daily Mirror) - A suspect has been arrested for defrauding money by forging the power-of-attorney for a land of 04 acres and 23 perches in Pannala, taking possession of the property and selling it for Rs. 16 million.

The incident was reported to the Criminal Investigation Department in 2017 and the suspect involved in the incident was arrested yesterday.

Police said the suspect was arrested by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department.

The arrested person is a 72-year-old resident of Athurugiriya.

He was released on Rs. 500,000 surety bail and Rs. 10,000 cash bail after being produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court.

The culprit has sold the property for Rs16 million but he has been released on surety bail for only Rs 500,000 and cash bail of only Rs 10,000. Since 2017 he has escaped the law and is now 72 years old. He may not be living at the next hearing ?

Land fraud is seen in Sri Lanka. Especially those who are living abroad notice that their house and property has changed hands two or three times without their knowledge. It had been done by a scrupulous care taker. The judiciary should be very strict on these matters. Prison sentences should be a deterrent in these types of fraudulent activities.
