The construction of the new railway line from Matara to Beliatta at an estimated cost of US$278 million with Chinese assistance is now reaching completion.

The 27-kilometer railway line has five stations and two sub lines along the way and stretches over 14 bridges, fly-overs and 14 subway crossings and also runs through a 606-metre tunnel. (Chandrasena Gamage)

extension of our southern railway-line from Matara to Kataragama considered as one of the prime requirements for development of the South. I realized this after studying the Seoul-Bussan highway development concept in South Korea. I had a strong negotiation with KOICA and they agreed provide a grant to carryout the Development Study and Korea Consultant International /KCI in collaboration with SLR did it in given time. the Korean Ambassador agreed with me to allocate US $ 40.MN,as initial soft loan from Economic Development Cooperation Fund /EDCF of South Korea in 1996. I still have copies of the Feasibility Study Report and Project Site Plans with three alternative lines suggested. if we did the project we would have saved much funds and time. however, the rest of the 'story' very sad! hence the delay.

USD 278 million for only 27 km railway! I really can't believe this. Sri Lanka will eventually collapse repaying the high debts to Chinese one day.
