Matchbox makers facing closure due to low-quality gas lighter imports

Colombo, June 13 (Daily Mirror) - Local matchbox manufacturers claim that their factories are on the verge of closing down and they are currently in a critical situation due to the imports of low-quality gas lighters.

Environmentalists also claimed that the low-quality gas lighters imported in bulk are causing significant environmental pollution after being discarded once the gas runs out.

It was reported that a large number of low-income families are working in a match box manufacturing company in Kundasale, Kandy.

Accordingly, the workers in local matchbox manufacturing companies claimed that the spread of low-quality gas lighters will cause them to lose their jobs.

Its true. but as a consumer, now i buy lighter mostly because price of match box has gone up, the burn time of a match has gone down, and also lacks rigidity and breaks often, also half the match box go on waste since they do not light properly, even the match box does not last long in normal environment.make a decent matchbox solving the above issues and i will buy it

The poor quality of matchboxes could be the real reason that consumers have shifted to lighters. Easily verified by checking the two most widely available brands both of which start with 'S.' One has thin matchsticks that bend when struck, and the striker surface wear out really quick. Easily 30 - 40% cannot be used. The other brand is a bit better with around 20% unusable in every box. Sad commentary on industrial sector and consumer watchdogs when a country cannot manufacture even a proper matchbox. The political activists who get these people on the road should really do some soul searching.

This Isn't a Public concern, its tje organizations they need to improve innovate and change with the future world... Nobody lights match stick in this era.... They should have manufactured lighters instead... So they are ok if good quality lighters come in to market..... Our country will never Develop

With the financial crisis, match boxes went up in price. 3-4 times. Cost escalations would have been 100-150 % . Now costs are 75% lesser but price same. NO! We won’t buy matches, Lighters are NOT bad quality. Period! Don’t act like the water bottle companies by spreading rumors, about quality of alternative products (which are of much better quality such as the Indian eggs)

Ling Madiyo and Poverty victims are the voter bases for selfish politicians. Country must educate these poor people to be competitive and to change as necessary rather than demanding protected environments via subsidies etc. Having said that with industry automation many more industries will not have a requirement for labour. Eg German ports have very few port workers. Those of you who think NPP(JVP) understands the solutions must demand their real solutions on how to survive without been ling madiyo
