Colombo, December 10 (Daily Mirror) - A gazette notification (2414/02) was issued yesterday by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), specifying the maximum retail and wholesale prices for local rice varieties.

Accordingly, these prices came into effect from yesterday (9).

Following the issue of the gazette, the CAA has ordered that no manufacturer, producer, supplier, distributor or trader may sell, supply, display or offer for sale the local rice varieties listed below at prices exceeding the stipulated maximum.

It says a gazette was issued for the maximum retail price. What the government has actually done is issue a gazette increasing the selling price of certain varieties of rice by Rs. 10/-. They are fooling the general public and are not in a position to control the rice mafia. These days, there is no rice in most of the outlets, especially in Colombo.

This is very much the same as the grand sugar tax robbery spoken very loudly by the JVP. Only difference is that is is very cleverly veiled in government approval and transparency. Stocks of rice hidden to drive up the price was not exposed but rice prices allowed to be increased by 20/- per kg. Importing Nadu at 110/- and selling at 230/- giving a thumping profit of above 100/- per kg. Welldone AKD for joining the 76 year disaster group in grand style...we knew you are the same...thanks for proving it.

Kept hopes for a better future for the majority of the country.. Understand that we should wait till few more months.. But the above action made a better place to the large rice mills owners and not to the public. Since the decision is already taken, now it's better to focus on their taxes to be paid on their profits at least.
