A metal piece from a gas lighter was found in a fish bun purchased from a food stall in Panadura yesterday.

The incident came to light when a girl discovered the metal piece while eating with her father at their residence in the Arukgoda area in Panadura.

Upon discovering the piece of metal they contacted the area’s Public Health Inspector (PHI). However, the PHI had informed them that he was on leave and advised them to report the matter to the Panadura PHI office.

The father subsequently reported the incident to the Panadura PHI office, but the officers reportedly refused to accept the complaint and had turned them away.

When questioned, Panadura PHI Isha Mahindadasa said that she had not received any such complaints. Later, she acknowledged that someone had come to meet her but clarified that action would only be taken if a written complaint was submitted regarding the matter.

Food hygiene in srilanka is one of lowest in ASIA .Inspectors must be sacked or given stern warning .The shops and hotels do not maintain hygiene and proper food handling must be sealed and closes .This is the only way we can maintain the high standards

Looks like pushing the issue away and no SOP has been set up by the senior officer to accept public feedback. Health Minister should start calling up the heads of departments and set the expectations correctly. Those junior officers involved should be counselled and if it’s repeated again, they must be fired- period. This episode should be shared with other provinces and not repeated again when public submits feedback.
