Misuse of President’s Fund: Dayasiri responds to allegations

Colombo, December 20 (Daily Mirror) - MP Dayasiri Jayasekera has rejected allegations that he improperly benefited from the President’s Fund.

The remarks follow Minister Jayatissa’s recent parliamentary disclosure of payments from the President’s Fund to politicians between 2005 and 2024.

Clarifying the matter, he told media that he did receive Rs. 400,000 from the Fund in 2019 for a heart surgery approved by then-President Maithripala Sirisena.

Presenting hospital bills, he explained that the Fund covered only part of his treatment at Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital after a heart attack, with the remainder paid from his personal funds.

Jayasekera criticized Minister Jayatissa for making "inaccurate claims" and called for an end to politically motivated accusations regarding the Fund.

As Jayasekara claims he has got at least a grant of Rs 400,000/= from President’s fund for his heart surgery. Whereas the poor citizens of this country get nothing more than Rs 150,000/= from the same fund for partial settlement of their medical bills. They have to beg, borrow or steal to settle the balance. Why is double standard. Is that fair?

Why should politicians be given money from President's funds when its very difficult for an ordinary citizen to get? At the end most of the politicians who took money have more assets than most of the citizens and this alone is a misuse of funds belonging to the citizens.

This clearly relates to ethics, especially for a politician who comes to power through people's votes but ends up looting their rights. Would an independent citizen have the same privilege? In the same statement, the person mentions that fund allocation is decided by a committee. However, later, they say that President Sirisena promised and asked the staff of J'Pura Hospital to send him the request so he could arrange the payment. This shows how they misused the funds. Now, you don’t even say a single word to make things fair and balanced. You, along with the other politicians (both government and opposition), have clearly misused the funds. If you truly care about ethics, please repay it.

You are not entitled to a cent from the Presidents fund. The fund is there only for persons who have no means at all to pay their Hospital bills. Basically for underprivileged individuals. Today how many people suffer without means to pay their hospital bills. Would they get access like you did for so much ? You have assets and money, it’s a disgrace that people like you took advantage of your position as a Minister to serve your self. The president should be held accountable first, it’s not his money to distribute as he wishes. If not for this new government coming to power we would not have known all this.

So, you received something for which the average person, perhaps with far more serious and urgent needs, spends ages and ages, completing a ton of paperwork. It would be really helpful if you mentioned how long you had to wait to get the approval and the money. Also, remember that every cent in that fund belongs to the citizens of the country; no president can spend anything from the fund on their lackeys.
