Most beautiful elephant in Kalawewa National Park found dead

Colombo, November 28 (Daily Mirror) - Deega Danthu 1, widely regarded as the most beautiful elephant in the Kalawewa National Park, was found dead today after becoming entangled in an illegal electric fence, the National Park Warden confirmed.

The tragic incident occurred in the Inguruwa area of Andiyagala as the elephant was moving towards the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary, its usual habitat.

The majestic tusker, estimated to be between 45 and 50 years old, had been relocated to the Kahalla Pallekele Sanctuary due to the overflowing of the Kala Wewa reservoir due to the recent weather conditions.

Deega Danthu 1 was renowned for having the longest tusks among the Kalawewa elephants and was believed to be the last of its kind in the national park. The elephant contributed significantly to tourism, attracting foreign visitors eager to witness its beauty.

Despite its imposing size, Deega Danthu 1 was known for its gentle nature and had never harmed anyone.

Meanwhile, its twin, Deega Danthu 2, has also been sighted in the Kala Wewa area recently, drawing attention to its tusks.

The police said that investigations are underway to arrest the person who installed the unauthorized electricity line. (Additional reporting B.G. Chathuranga)
