State minister of Indigenous medicine Sisira Jayakody said that a cabinet paper has been presented to legalize cannabis.

The state minister said they hope that the cabinet will approve it over the next few weeks.

"We also plan to present the legal framework in parliament because as per the existing laws cannabis can be grown only for medical and scientific purposes and not for recreational activities," he said.

l agree with the ministers statement some extent. Even before the invasion of Britain The indigenous doctors used this herb in order to manufacture numerous drugs like decoctions and certain herbal drinks. Furthermore if the government legalize the cannabis cultivation in good faith it may be more beneficial for our economic improvement

Ah. The 2500 year old culture and Buddhist country! Where are the monks and patriots when you need them?!! Idiotic proposals like this is a waste of time and tax payer money to fund parliament sessions. People are starving with food shortages and he is talking about legalization of recreational cannabis. Is it hard to use the land and the incredibly fertile soil to grow food that will benefit ALL citizens? Cannabis is only going to benefit a small number of people who want to live like hippies, do nothing all day but smoke and sleep and act like Bob Marley. That does not include these MPs who will be growing it and making millions off the backs of addicts.

Lost the plot!!! majority of those addicted to drugs around the world initially started taking it for recreational use and have ended up where they are today either dead, shot, stealing, selling their bodies, homeless, cut off from family, becoming peddlers, in mental institutes and the likes. Cannabis for medical purposes must be grown by licence and strictly monitored to make sure it goes towards medicinal use prescribed by specialist doctors and records kept and monitored to make sure it is not over prescribed and patients records kept on a database. The situation in the country at the moment is going to take many years to bounce back leaving room for this move to get out of hand/control, as some people will start rouge cultivations in the jungles like in the years gone by. But as for my opinion if made legal it will be the downfall of society. NoToGanja

The US exports 1bn worth of cannabis every year, we could do same, all these people writing negative comments should look at what's happened in us, after legalisation new users dropped drastically, criminal gangs making money from sales reduced, if someone wants to use something that doesn't harm themselves or others why are people complaining, you will have less drunks if it is legalized, less road fatalities, less fights, less domestic abuse, some people are just backward, country will go no where with backward thinkers
