NPP complains to Elections Commission against Rajitha Senaratne

Colombo, August 31 (Daily Mirror)- The National People's Power (NPP) has complained to the Elections Commission against Parliamentarian Rajitha Senarathne over a statement made by him.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Elections Commission, NPP politburo member Sunil Handunnetti said Senaratne, who joined President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently, had released a threatening statement to a YouTube channel in a move to prevent expatriate workers from coming to Sri Lanka to vote at the upcoming Presidential election.

He said Senaratne has threatened the expatriate workers not to come to Sri Lanka to vote for Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

He said several millions of expatriate workers are eligible to vote at the 2024 Presidential election and that issuing threatening statements is a hindrance to ensure a free and fair election.

Handunnetti said Senaratne has violated clause 78(1) in section iv of the Presidential Elections Act, No. 15 of 1981 by exerting undue influence.

Rajitha is a spent force and a candidate for the elders home. Not a sausage is worried for his threats. Ranil with his henchmen is trying everything to cling on to power. Rajitha may be what you describe of him but your Handunnetti has no idea when says millions are going to come from abroad to vote for AKD. Moreover, your statement about arresting Rajitha is what defines the mental status of NPP. So this means when NPP is in power they will just arrest anyone at anytime when their cadres want. Right?

Who cares for what Rajitha says, there will be arrivals in Sri Lanka during this period as usual and whoever who is eligible to vote may decide to vote or not vote to anyone they like. There will not definitely be millions coming in to vote anyone . May be a maximum of 4000 may come specifically for voting. Rajitha only says not to come and vote for AKD so there is no case against him on this. NPP always say not to vote for anyone other than NPP.

How can several millions come yo Sri Lanka for voting? In 2023 , total arrivals were 3 6 millions so the average per month is 300,000 . There aren't enough flights for even 500,000 to come here within a short period. This man who is going to be Finance Minister cannot even make a common sense guess.

But , Dee , how many came for Gota may be 10,000 max. Those 10,000 did not make any difference in the result. So , Rajith's statement is not relevant, it is similar in type to what AkD's team members are saying . This time probably 4,000 may come specifically gor this purpose. To bring in 1,000,000 people there should be 2875 flights arriving in Sri Lanka which is impossible. The whole world will have to cancel their flights and use their aircrafts to serve Sri Lanka to appoint a rebel leader who has done nothing but destruction and disruption

No one can stop any expatriates coming to Sri Lanka to vote. The biggest question the public will want to know iswhat were the expatriates doing when we were suffering with many scarcities like food, fuel, electricity, gas etc. most probably they would have been hilariously laughing at the plight of the Sri Lankans. Some of these expatriates were instrumental in promoting the aragalaya to destroy parliament and now they want to support these assholes to come to Parliament. This category of expatriates are the JVP diaspora who are enjoying the good climes of other countries and want to destroy the livelihoods of the public living here by coming to give their ballot to these revolutionaries who previously messed up the countries wealth. With air travel commanding high prices what bullshit to come here to cast their vote. Real friends can be measured even in bad times they extend their support but these worms come to disrupt the smooth functioning and livelihoods of the public!!!!!

Overseas remittances amount to nearly $7B per annum, the largest, which is keeping SL going, even tourism is around $4B. How arrogant, ill informed, demeaning and insensitive comment. Shame. Have a look at NPP’s policy for expatriates released today. Have previous governments even thought about these things, the problems faced by them working hard in foreign countries to feed their kith and kin here. Think before you write rubbish.

@Dilakshan Seneviratne - Being an expatriate ,myself for several years contributing to the coffers of this government through remittances and maintaining foreign currency accounts we have being prudent by sending monies to Sri Lanka instead of spending on high air travel. The motive of these JVP diaspora coming to this country is to create chaos of the smooth functioning of this country. Now you are shedding crocodile tears for the expatriates and say that the revolutionaries are the only party who have thought about the expatriates and their contributions. Do you know how much damage these revolutionaries have done to the public (killings) and wealth of this country in billions and look at history these fellows have robbed banks and siphoned to their own pockets. You cannot reform a revolutionary as they have been doctored with extreme ideas and there only greed is coming to power by hook or by crook. You have lost your marbles by giving high esteem to this motley crew!!!
