Colombo, August 28 (Daily Mirror) - Pledges made by National Peoples Power (NPP) if implemented will reduce annual state revenue by Rs 200 billion, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.
Speaking during a rally in Mawanella, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the tax reductions pledged by the NPP manifesto will result in a fall of the Sri Lankan economy.
“The country is travelling across a suspension bridge. However, the NPP if elected will cut down the bridge. The country’s economy will fall in such an eventuality,” he said.
“I also read the NPP manifesto. It took me three days to read it. It will take you three months to finish reading it. Don’t bother to read it but use your vote intelligently,” he told the people at the meeting.
Also he announced that his manifesto named ‘Puluwan Sri Lanka will be launched on Thursday August 29, 2024.

When they prune all unnecessary govt. expenses and corruption is stopped this is not that much difficult to set off against this revenue loss. But they try to give more concession to poor masses to bail out them from the present crisis. They have a long time plan unlike Govts. had only interim plan by borrowing more and more but no plan for repayments

Chris Wednesday, 28 August 2024 11:47 AM
How will they prune and at the same time retain the failed State sector. AKD is full of talk. Will be worse that Gota hundred times over.

They have already identified the recurrent expenditures those have to be removed and pruned. But they should be given majority in Parliament as well. This will bring a saving to treasury. Hope you and I will have better life than before.

How many billions lost by your Central Bank robbery, sugar robbery, medicine robbery etc. How about tax to be collected from liquor companies? Are you asking people to vote you to continue your and your friends robbery? NPP will find money from other areas to give people a better life. Wait until tax avoiders are taxed. Wait for your jail term as well because Prime Minister actions does not attract any legal immunity.

But NPP will reduce the corruption and looting, thus will bring in more than 200 billion surplus to the economy. Dear RW pls don’t fool us anymore.

"Stop the Freebie Fiesta: Time to Trade Our Old Bus Driver for a GPS!" Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:34 PM
Hey there! Are we really handing out freebies and pork barreling like it’s a clearance sale at a dollar store, without even checking the price tags? Let’s stop the fearmongering! We all know we’re in a bit of a financial pickle, but it’s time to bring in some fresh thinkers to steer the ship. No more old-timers with dusty playbooks telling us how to run things! Let’s kick the old bus driver to the curb and get someone behind the wheel who actually knows how to navigate the potholes today.

This guy is definitely living in another world. After inaction for 2 years to grow the economy he has opened his stupid mouth again. Revenue comes from growth and that is what the NPP policy is about. The irony for this country is that there are still a few stupid people who swallow this garbage.

Priyal Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:20 PM
You first need to stabilize before growth. Anyone who has run their own business would know that. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to know that.
3 6
Dilakshan Seneviratne Wednesday, 28 August 2024 04:36 PM
Correct. But stabilisation occurred not because of RW. Oil prices which went up by 8 times during GR era, came down to normal after GR left. Also, SL stopped paying loan instalments and interest. Imports were reduced. These are logical steps that any businessman would have done, isn’t it? Revenue increased thereafter with taxes up, killing the middle class. Wasted revenue on unwanted expenses and corruption. No incentives for growth at all.

Gamini Wednesday, 28 August 2024 02:04 PM
what growth is NPP talking about? what action plan for growth do they have? Striking, protesting, keeping away from work, doling out tax payers money to buy votes are NOT growth strategies for growth

Dilakshan Seneviratne Wednesday, 28 August 2024 04:39 PM
Cynicism without reason? Gives some satisfaction? That’s ok, but read NPP policy document now available and try to understand how this country can be taken forward. Then talk or write or whatever.

Each candidate has every right to compare and comment each others manifestos. And if there is bullshit in it let it be called out. If intellectual property has been stolen show it up. If this is not done the voters would be hoodwinked by the gloss and sweet wording in the documents. Hope we all remember GR's manifesto put together by Viyath Maga!

When we had war in the North, those in cool city of Colombo enjoying all the facilities used to gossip and say the war can be won easily. But Late Mr. Denzil Kobbekaduwa lost his life along with other majors and soldiers. When Rahul Ghandhi took revenge on Prabha and finished the LTTE, those who were near and dear took credit and fooled the nation with a slogan of "Yuddha Dinuwa". NPP which has No Proper Planning are talking like winning the war. I have a simple question for Anura when Yuddha took place where were you?????

saman Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:45 PM
Ranil, so you admitted that NPP will win the presidency. Analyzing the Rs. 200.0 billion loss or shortfall that you quote, do you know 1) if NPP stop looking after the ex presidents and the widow the amount of billions they will save, 2) if they contain the cost to maintain the president (now its you) how much can they save, 3) when they stop the corruption and wastage the savings, 4) collect the unpaid taxes from liquor factories, casino owners and their related businesses, and 5) collect unpaid or underpaid taxes from businessman with strong ties with the government, NPP will end ups with a surplus to balance the budget, my dear.

jaya Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:46 PM
I don't think Ranil has read NPP manifesto at all. . perhaps one of his close associates might have read it for him! As usual he is trying to create a fear psychosis among masses by telling pseudo estimates on state revenue. This is certainly a bogus calculation!

Gona Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:26 PM
Why is he worried? When there is no corruption, less revenue is not going to hit the economy. It favours the citizens. Now what Ranil does is he squeezes the throats of citizens to collect unbearable taxes and spending those to award mega contracts to his cronies and bed mates.

Ian Bertus Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:42 PM
So what is Rs. 200 billion compared to the provision of 1.5 billion US $ for the Armed Forces? This figure can easily be recouped by cutting down Government expenses that we cannot afford. The problem why we need a change of people is because Ranil wants to find money to sustain the current wasteful expenses that are useless. Ranil's economic policy is to find mony to sustain the useless infrastructures that are a burden to the larger masses. The Malimas thinking is to do away with waste and unnecessary expenditures.
