NPP urges EC to declare Presidential polls sooner to stop further confusion

Colombo, July 17 (Daily Mirro)- The National People's Power (NPP) today urged the election commission to declare the dates for the presidential election sooner as the government is still attempting to create confusion among the people and the people have a doubt about the election commission as well.

NPP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference that the Elections Commission was empowered to declare the presidential election from yesterday and that it should exercise its powers to declare the election sooner so as to stop further hesitancy and doubt being created among the people.

He said the doubt about the election among the people must be stopped to uphold people's trust in elections and the trust on changing rulers democratically.

"The power to decide on the presidential election is on the hand of the EC now not on the government or the President. We request EC to exercise its power and declare the dates for the election sooner. There is still hesitancy among the people about the election. Ranil and Mahinda Rajapaksa faction are still creating confusion and doubt among the people, it should be stopped," he said.

Silva said people have some doubt about the elections commission also as it failed to conduct the Local Government election when the government postponed it.

"We know that the EC made some effort to conduct LG polls. But, it was not the best effort," he said.

The elections commission is responsible for the people and the Constitution not for the President, government or the political parties.
