Colombo, June 12 (Daily Mirror)- The National People's Power (NPP) would bring in a new Constitution under its rule, which would incorporate a lasting solution to the national issue agreed by all parties, NPP MP Vijitha Herath said today.
He told a news conference that the solution to the national issue would be introduced with the agreement after discussions with all parties and that discussions in that regard have not yet started.
Responding to a question on the meeting with NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and TNA representatives in Jaffna, he said the NPP would discuss with all parties who are concerned with bringing in a lasting solution to the national issue and other issues and come to an agreement.
He said the Constitution in Sri Lanka is outdated and added that future NPP government would draft a new Constitution suitable to the country.

Please make it a priority to build a Sri Lankan identity and common destiny for all citizens. I think most of the extremists will be defeated at the elections and that will create space for a calm discussion on how to solve our problems

If extremists will be defeated at elections, how will these guys come into power?

Since when did NPP become extremist? I think he meant the Bodubala extremists connected to Pohottuwa who are now in the same bed with UNP.

You are in parliament for 24 years and done nothing. Also what did you do to the funds allocated for a parliament mp. Just a talker.

In addition to those funds JVP has 6 billion rupees in their party accounts including monies coming from Cuba, Russia. The SJB at least spends on small community projects. JVP does move a cent for the welfare of the people. Their leader AKDs wife and child is in a Scandinavian country so he has to spend party money for regular travel. Its allowed in their party rules. Majority of the NPP supporters are not aware of the massive hoodwinking the JVP is doing. One fine day they will also sideline the genuine NPP educated members like Dr Harini, Dr Jayantha and lawyer Harshana same way they once dumped another lawyer - one krismal Warnasuriya

As the Cultural minister under Chandrika along with that AKD as the Agricultural minister did nothing. So, they also helped to make this country bankrupt by canvassing for that Helping Hambanthota Mahinda, etc.

@ Man - Fully agree. In the same breath, Sajith emptied the Cultural Fund coffers just before the last Presidential Elections distributing people's money to enhance his chances at the election.

Renovation of water tanks in agricultural areas in the 1000 Tank Development Programme implemented under Anura Kumara Dissanayake's short tenure as Minister of Agriculture, and also bought buses for the staff transport (which is still in use till date)

@ Jeppa; There are no 1,000 tanks in SL unless fish tanks and did he do any work with his funds. Nothing. Talks only but no action. How many busses? Nonsense.

Jeppa Thursday, 13 June 2024 04:34 PM
Buses were bought using his vehicle allowance as a minister. 1000 Lakes project was implemented by him and later but shortly after he had resigned from ministerial post and exited that coalition in protest of some issue. The minister who had taken over had followed it through, not sure what is the status now.

All parties won’t agree . Thats the problem. If it does not satisfy the majority, there will be trouble in the land. Once bitten twice shy. Go for a common Tamil candidate. Do not worry about the majority community. Unless it’s two states in one country, Tamils can never progress. That’s the underlying concern of the majority, two states- Tamils will prosper by leaps and bounds over the others. Pure jealousy. That’s why the ministers burnt the Jaffna library.

Paving the way for electing the most dislike unless those constituents mark their respective first and second preferences. Be aware of it. In fact, the ordinary Tamil people want economic freedom rather than the political freedom. So, distribution of funds, equally is essential. Nothing else as the ordinary people will be ordinary people for ever unlike politicians even of the Northern Province.

All the businessmen who were with MR were well compensated with peoples money. Some made millions ...or billions? through Sugar, Antigen...etc. And some made money through inside trading and illegally manipulating the market at SEC. Some of them are in the parliament now and some out of it wearing full suits and some in white.

I wholeheartedly welcome the idea of a new constitution. Let the all-powerful Presidential Sytems, the hybrid electoral system, nominated MP system go. Provincial Councils must go for they serve no purpose. Who are they? What do they do? Where do they meet? Nobody knows. MPs and Ministers must be below 70 years. Give technocrats a bigger stake in the system.

The goal now should be economic development, not ethnic separatism.

For economic development , one needs two states in one country. This will improve competition. Note there are two languages, religions, culture, ethnicity, geographical areas of living etc. International harbours, airports, factories, roads, housing have to be developed to improve economy.,

Great to say NPP government would draft a new Constitution suitable to the country without publishing it in your website or other publication for us to know beforehand. Otherwise you will say you got a mandate but put in clauses favourable to you only.

After Anura Kumara's visit to Tamil politicians, it must logically be a grand (!) announcement that the NPP will solve the national question after the elections!!! But how credible is this for a party that, 15 years after the war, has not even made any possible solutions public! Is it all just election propaganda or something more!??? A permanent solution to this national question is undoubtedly urgent!!! Someone who knows this subject better than anyone else is Sarath Fonseka! He has the stature, the format and the strength to find a permanent solution to this central problem of the nation, together with Tamil counterparts who are on an equal footing, in a spirit of mutual respect and in a cooperative manner!!! His words and promises will be believed, unlike the big-mouthed announcements of other politicians!!!

Constitution to rule until death as in Xi and Putin. This is the people's biggest fear. You guys still live in that socialist mentality. NPP has so many members saying different things at different times. No fixed policy. None of this comes from AKD. Who is the real leader of NPP??

Yeah, same as SJB. Sajith says a policy contrary to his party members.

The constitution should provide for 2 States with Independent Governance in (1) One Nation Country, otherwise there will never be a solution to the festering problems!!!??? 75 Years is GOOD period, during which all alternatives have been tested and assessed as per Majority DESIRE and have been proven Failures, by STUFFING the administration people NOT of National MERIT but BIAS towards Ethnicity of Majority - resulting in STARVATION, BANKRUPTCY!?

What is the "national issue"? All SL needs is an equal opportunity for all. All Sri Lankans need to be free to live, work anywhere in the country, acquire properties anywhere in the country, get an education and get a job on merit, not on race, religion, colour etc. SL should ban ethnicity and religion-based political parties. It does not matter who is good, as long as he or she advances Sri Lankan identity. Stop dividing the country based on race and religion. Allow everyone to live and work freely based on skills. Look at developed countries, they never divide their countries, but allow people to progress on merit. Stop other bullshits.

New Constitution must prevent any person over 65 from contesting. It must also have some provision on crossing the floor to support a different party leaving the party/voters that elected the MP. If NPP is elected the readers will propose many more suggestions to be considered

Constitutions drafted by one alliance in 1972 and one party in 1978 created all problems. Referendum for the new constitution and the presidential election must come together because no one party is supreme now and time to forward a better constitution to end or minimize corruption in future.

The big question: What couldn't they support the various initiatives to address these concerns, even in some measure, when various initiatives were mooted in the past. They boycotted invitations to participate in meetings and conferences, and failed to lend support to such initiatives, and now play lip service with hollow promises when elections draw neigh. We remember their anti-indian stance merely because india expressed concerns about issues in the north and east and exerted pressure to have them resolved. The only guy who had the foresight ad wisdom and has sought to genuinely resolve this long standing issue while balancing the many views and aspirations for the long-term benefit of the country as a whole has been RW. His attempts each time have been sabotaged by extremists on the southern side, to the country's detriment.

"After discussion with the all parties" is a slogan used to turn down an issue under the carpet without providing a concrete solution. Bring a new constitution means replete the 13 amendment from our constitution. Explain your party stance on this regard clearly to the people.

Your party's dramatic speeches worked out well in the 2004 parliamentary election when, you all got 39 seats with the blessing of CBK, and were rewarded so many ministries and you all did nothing but criticized previous govt for yours inability to do something for the people.

Oh is it so? Read Sri Lanka History. What happened in 1948 and 1956.? The first ethnic riots in 1956. Why? They burnt the Jaffna Publi Library in 1981. Why? Read man.
