NPP will ensure political rights of expatriate workers: Anura Kumara
Colombo, September 1 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that certain politicians have issued threatening statements against Sri Lankan expatriate workers challenging their political rights, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today that the NPP will ensure the political rights of Sri Lankan expatriate workers.
Speaking at an even to launch the NPP's programme on expatriate workers, he said an NPP government will take steps to provide voting rights to Sri Lankan expatriate workers from overseas.
"Migration of Sri Lankans is not dispelling their political rights. An organised campaign has been launched targeting expatriate workers. Recently Rajitha Senaratne threatened expatriate workers not to come to vote this time. People had to migrate because those politicians failed to create a country where they can live happily. They like to live in Sri Lanka," he said.
He said certain politicians are perturbed after realising that expatriate workers have made a huge contribution to and the trend towards a National People's Power victory.

one of the best policies of NPP and all NPP policies are excellent and this one is well designed and it can be improved a little bit in areas of mutual cooperation and knowledge sharing between Sri Lankans and expatriates. One million Lankans are now in Europe and they accumulated a wealth of knowledge in trade, industries, education heath care. , retails, IT, science, higher education, teaching and many other areas of development and innovation. The best policies are; (i) Collecting 500 US $ each from Sri Lankan's who have migrated or abroad. (ii) Printing money (SL) resulting inflation (iii) Sell whatever available (iv) Take over all the Fixed deposits of Sri Lankans. (v) Money that swindled or illegally earned, to be made legal for using for government expenses. (vi) Devolution of Judicial power to carders with dispute resolution councils, like in 1988-90. (vii) Allowing loans for the public without any guarantor so that the depositors will have no money in their accounts. What a way indeed!

Anura has to think twice about this. If Anura allows expatriate workers, then all Sri Lankan passport holders living abroad will be entitled as they have not become citizens in another country. To that extent, the influence on Sri Lankan politics from Sri Lankan passport-carrying overseas residents will be extremely strong.

So long a person holds Sri Lankan citizenship, he should be allowed to vote. Even if they are not physically in the country most of time especially in their younger age, eventually most will return home with a substantial amount of hard earned income once they feel comfortable with the amount of funds saved. Most also continuously send money for the upkeep of the family back home every month. Just do a survey and see if this is true! If not for them, more loans are needed to sustain the high government expenditures especially to maintain political fellas with their luxury lifestyle using a fleet of high end vehicles and security personnel.

Why can't we create an App for all Sri Lankan's to vote while living overseas instead of having to pay thousands of dollars for a return ticket and time. The criteria should be based on ID Number or Passport Number, Date of Birth and the last name so there will be no duplicates. Those who needs to vote using this APP send a mail giving the above criteria and a single time mail will be sent to them for voting. If any other applicant has the same three criteria's then his/her mail request will be cancelled.

This will be easily compromised by Cyber hackers and millions of votes will be cast by fraudsters. Sri lankan citizens residing in other countries may vote at their respective embassies. This is how other countries do. This could possibly add significant cost to the country so the cost benefit should be evaluated first.

This idea has been long due. Politician's decisions at this election to pursue the matter is very welcoming. SJB too has the idea proposed in their manifesto as well. A good total voters of 4.1million have a right of recognition. Other countries in Asia too have " on line" voting possibilities.

Pls make sure nepotism will end esp. political appointees (unqualified relatives) of politicians are sent as ambassadors, consul generals and various positions and even after completion of their tenure, they’re given unlimited extension by RW administration depriving career diplomats to serve the country by keeping politicos relatives..

This is vote catching only. How will this affect the peoples need to have a better tomorrow. But some will fall for this type of useless ideas of no value and vote but useless for the betterment of the stuation we are placed in now. So far NPP TV appearences have only shown up rhetoric and displayed their inability to form an effective experienced leadership team. Handunetti showed up a cropper in the Satana program.

What a naive and baseless comment. NPP is the only party in SL’s history that has put together a comprehensive policy document covering all facets of society. NPP appreciates the fact the economy in SL is holding because of the $ 7B that expats send as remittances. This is the highest foreign exchange earner more than tourism, tea export etc. These people who work hard in trying conditions to send back money to their kith and kin back home must be listened to and their needs catered to. Only NPP has presented an outstanding policy yesterday. Think about it and study it, then comment please.

May be NPP has presented a policy statement, but have you not seen the errors. There is one para where if you total percentages it comes to 104.5 not 100. Good reading but inaccuracies and just superficial ideas.

HIGH COMMISSION, EMBASSY AND THE LIKES AND ASK FOR A POSTAL VOTE WELL IN ADVANCE, FILL IN AND REGISTER BY POST BACK TO WHERE THEY GOT THE FORM FROM AND NUMBERS ARE SENT BACK TO COLOMBO BY SPECIAL MAIL VIA THE SRI LANKAN HIGH COMMISSION, EMBASSY OR CONSULATE AS FAR AS i KNOW AS i HAVE VOTED FROM OVERSEA IN THIS MANNER MANY A TIME.

Foolish idea. Think about the fools who came and voted gota. They did not suffer but those who lived in SL suffered because of those fools. If somone has obtained PR or citizenship elsewhere, they should not be allowed to vote in SL.

I know some people who celebrated when they obtained citizenship of another country with great pleasure. The very same people who don't even have voting rights here are the most enthusiastic lot about the upcoming elections by sharing political hatred on their Facebook. If they are so worried about the future of this country, why did they obtained citizenship from another country in the first place?

Before you get expats overseas to vote. Please sort out the Airport. This evening was an utter disgrace and chaotic. Multiple verifications are conducted causing delays. Expat workers screened by SLFEB and then again by immigration counters. We sure know how to overly complicate stuff.

Is this the only programme gor expats? In vain ,many gathered into this hotel meeting and some living in New Zealand claiming that they will show how they will be sending dollars to the country. I wonder if he is aware that exparts in the Middle East countries, Korea and Italy have been sending dollars in a consistent manner this year. I wonder how this New Zealander who is subject to heavy taxes here would even afford to send 100 dollars to SL. People who migrated to developed countries cannot afford to send dollars like those working as exparts in mostly tax free countries.

NPP trying to act tough over a non-issue. Expat workers know their voting rights. No one is going to take leave especially to come and vote! They can do it already at the embassy or they will skip voting because it's a waste of time since nothing ever changes.
