Colombo, October 26 (Daily Mirror) - The National People’s Party (NPP) has achieved a major victory in the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election held on Saturday (26).

Out of 36,305 valid votes cast, the NPP gained a clear majority, while other parties like Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) and the People’s Alliance won fewer seats.

29 representatives for 55K people? Such a waste of money.

Especially since 18818 did not turn to vote. Is it becos people are fed up or just not interested in these small councils which are top heavy and serve little purpose. 30 members for 36K voters is about one member for 1200 persons. Also out of the total votes cast NPP got 47% votes - creditable but not resounding as some expected.

SLPP - I am surprised that you still won 3 seats. SLPP led by the most corrupted Rajapakse family must be wiped out from the SLanka political landscape. Rajapakse's robbed our country wealth.

We should all aim to ensure that the NPP secures a two-thirds majority in Parliament. This will allow a strong, people-friendly parliament to strengthen the legal framework and ensure that every citizen is protected by the full force of the law. The goddess of justice should remain truly blind, improving police practices, and other government services and treating everyone equally, regardless of creed, class, or clan.

I would disagree. While NPP definitely needs a majority government, they don't need 2/3 to carry out presented manifesto. They only need 2/3 majority to remove the executive presidency. Which SJB promised they'll support as well.

That’s a Good balance of opposition for checking on NPP! Give them the majority too on 14th Nov but need a few educated opposition professionals mainly from SJB to keep an eye on the proposed legislation changes. NPP will be able to manoeuvre the economic and social issues with their team of experts.

YOHAN AS PER USUAL!!! WORK THE MATHS OUT AS GIVEN ABOVE BEFORE MOUTHING OFF. NPP 15 SEATS, SJB 6 SEATS, PEOPLES ALLIANCE 2 SEATS AND SLPP 3 SEATS TOTALS TO 26 SEATS IN TOTAL, CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW CJ GOT A TOTAL OF 29 AND YOHAN A TOTAL OF 30 SEATS?. CJ NEEDS TO REALISE ONLY 36,825 REGISTERED VOTERS AND YOHAN, YOU NEED TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT ANURA/NPP AND THEIR ADVISORS AND LEGAL TEAMS WILL BE GOVERNING THE COUNTRY AND NOT THE CORRUPTED LOT WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR DRAINING THE COUNTRY AND BRINGING IT DOWN TO ITS KNEES, BUT INCLUDES ALL THEIR STOOGES WHO COVERED UP ALL THE CORRUPTION AND GOT THEIR NESTS FEATHERED TOO INCLUDING SOME IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR/DEPTS.

In Sri Lanka, voters' preferences depend on factors like caste, image, personal gains, and even past grudges. Perhaps Alpitiya results cannot be taken to extrapolate onto islandwide results. Further, we cannot expect the NPP to do miracles and correct the damages done during past decades. Let's try new medicine in new bottles. Nowadays we see malpractices/power abuse in so-called super democracies like the USA, UK, etc. One improvement seen so far is placing the right people in the right positions.

But, Anura yelled that he would blast the rice mafia in 24 hours. He now knelt before Dudley. Talks only, no action. Just compare with the 100 day programme of the Yahapalan (Good) governance with no parliament power. Heading for Gota part II. A disastour, indeed.

He didn't give a date. But required only 24 hours. He wanted to reduce diesel to Rs. 150/= after removing so called commissions along with the prices of other essential items. He wanted to change the IMF agreement to suit the country. But, gleefully accepted it with selfies with them while keeping the tax burden on the public and many more lies.

BIG, CUT THE JVP THEY ARE A SUPPORTING PARTY OF ANURA/NPP. GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT. YOUR INTENTION IN CONFUSING THE VOTERS IS NOT HAPPENING, VOTERS HAVE MADE UP THEIR MIND. SAD TO SEE THE PEOPLES ALLIANCE ONLY GOT 2 SEATS. IF IT TAKES THE NPP AND JVP TOGETHER TO WIPE OUT CORRUPTION AND GIVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO THE MAJORITY WHO HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING AND SUFFERING LIKE NO OTHER TIME IN OUR HISTORY, SO BE IT. THE POEPLE ARE PREPARED TO TAKE A RISK RATHER THAN GET STUCK WITH CORRUPTION IN GOVT AND PUBLIC SECTOR.

Thanks for the comparison of both elections. It give a clear indication. Before the presidential election people didn't know what AKD would do if he becomes the president. Now having seen what AKD is upto people are voting against NPP (AKD). Is it surprising??? Not for me. Because, the country as a whole has embraced corruption. Corruption had become a way of life; a culture; now a part of heritage. Corruption has infested in the SL society from top to bottom. After having seen AKD vigorously going after corruption, those who voted for AKD in the presidential election are now voting for opposition parties. They know if NPP comes to power all of them will be in for trouble. What is alarming

See how keen NPP to relieve the downtrodden, starving people of about 7 M after making Sri Lanka possible, etc. They are keen to have more power to make sure that Sri Lanka is a Marxist country like North Korea as it is their priority rather than disbanding executive presidency as per the NPP representative mentioned on the media. Opposition won't oppose good things, at any cost. SL heading for disaster unlike the 100 day programme that he praised. I solely based on the facts of that NPP representative what he told. Nothing hypothetical. So the NPP will behave well to be acceptable to the public till the General Election. They are keen to have more power to make sure that Sri Lanka is a Marxist country as it is their priority rather than disbanding executive presidency as per the NPP representative mentioned on the media. SL heading for disaster unlike the 100-day programme that he praised.

Well done AKD and the team! Keep doing good work with examples as soon as possible! In the general election NPP will get at least 190 seats to fulfill their promises - abolish presidency, cut pensions and other benefits for MPs, no more houses or cars. No other country in the developed world will allow such Pin benefits while people are suffering! SL politicians must be ashamed!

Although this news headline shows a big will for NPP, it is not 50:50 only not a landslide victory. I believe JVP had done positive campaign to show the strength and the tread compared to others.

If NPP wait and waste valuable time, without taking action to ease heavy burdens on peoples shoulders, they will not get the majority in legislature. NPP having more powerfull executive powers, wastes time and worry only about parliamentry powers, like a batter who only occupy the crease without scoring in 50:50 match. Why cant NPP send rice and egg mafias over the rope? are they their friends to delay it? NPP loose more swing votes if they rely only on public sector votes. That is the message from Elpitiya where in 1971 April JVP took hold of Govt. stores in this town and freely distributed rice and flour to the people.

there is a good possibility. NPP is over confident calling everyone 'hora'. so no one will support them. there is a good possibility all the opposition including Tamil Muslim parties may rally around with SJB to form a government.
