Nanu-Oya tense after lorry runs over school girl

A tense situation prevailed in Nanu-Oya after a lorry ran over a school girl at a pedestrian crossing this morning, police said.

They said, people in the area had set fire to the lorry and this has resulted in heavy traffic on the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya main road.

The lorry driver was arrested by the Nanu-Oya police.

The accident had occured around 7.25 this morning near the Nanu-Oya police station.

IF it was a genuine "accident" they driver should have driven on to the next police station. THE SAD THING IS PEOPLE RESORT THESE TYPES OF VIOLENCE AS THEY LOSE FAITH IN THE LAW AN ORDER IN SRI LANKA.

This is a very sad affair. It is right that the rowdy truck driver, who has himself posed to the police, was arrested. But it can not be that the crowd has taken the right into their own hands. This is jungle law. The police have stood idly when the truck was set on fire in front of the police station. The arsonist has still not been arrested.
