National zoos earn higher income of over 150% than in 2023: Director General



The National Zoological Gardens Department has reported an income increase of over 150% compared to 2023, its Director General Ranjana Marasinghe said.

Speaking to the media, he said that the National Zoological Gardens had generated Rs. 1.42 billion in revenue as of December 23 this year, with the potential to reach Rs. 2 billion by year-end.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage contributed the largest share of the total income, accounting for 61.4% at Rs. 876 million.

Additionally, the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens contributed 22%, the Ridiyagama Safari Park 9%, and the Pinnawala Open Zoo 7.5% of the total income. 

The highest revenues were recorded in January, February, March, April and August, with January being the most profitable month.

“We anticipate similar income levels in January 2025 as well,” Marasinghe added.
