Navy nabs 2 for illegal night diving in eastern seas

The Navy apprehended two individuals engaged in illegal night diving in the sea off Sallikovil, Trincomalee, during a search operation on October 21.

The operation resulted in the seizure of a boat, diving gear and fishing equipment used for the illegal activity.

The Navy regularly conducts operations in coastal and sea areas around the island to prevent illegal fishing practices by individuals who disregard marine ecosystem sustainability.

Continuing these efforts, SLNS Vijayaba of the Eastern Naval Command carried out the operation in Sallikovil. Naval personnel intercepted a suspicious boat and apprehended two individuals involved in illegal night diving. Several pieces of diving gear and fishing equipment were also seized.

The suspects, aged 39 and 57, are residents of Salli Sampalthivu. They, along with the boat and the confiscated items, were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Trincomalee for legal action.
