Navy recovers 4.74 kgs of gold in Kalpitiya lagoon

Kalpitiya, August 7 (Daily Mirror)-The Sri Lanka Navy recovered a parcel containing 4 kgs and 740 gms of gold during a special search operation conducted at the Thorayadi Lagoon in Kalpitiya.

The operation also led to the seizure of a dinghy near the Thorayadi beach, which is suspected to have been used for smuggling the gold.

The operation, carried out by SLNS Vijaya of the North-Western Naval Command, was part of the Navy's routine efforts to prevent illegal activities via sea routes.

It is believed that smugglers may have deliberately sunk the gold package to evade detection and retrieve it later.

The recovered gold and dinghy have been handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for further legal proceedings.
