Navy seizes 27 Indian trawlers, detains 204 fishermen in 2024

June 24 - The Sri Lanka Navy has seized a total of 27 Indian poaching trawlers and detained 204 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters so far in 2024. 

The latest operation took place off Delft Island, Jaffna, during the early hours of June 22nd and 23rd.

The Northern Naval Command launched a swift response using Fast Attack Craft after detecting three Indian trawlers engaged in unauthorized fishing within Sri Lanka's maritime boundaries. The operation resulted in the interception of these vessels and the apprehension of their crew members.

Following the interception, the captured trawlers and detained fishermen were escorted to Kankesanthurai Harbour for further legal proceedings under the supervision of local fisheries authorities.
