Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - Due to the lack of updates in state universities, there is a higher demand in the job market for students who have studied at private universities, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

He said this while addressing the International Industrial Expo 2024 event held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) today.

Therefore, there should be a transformational change in the entire education process, the Minister said.

"The education in the country is still based only on knowledge and it has become a huge problem. Therefore, the entire education sector should be modernized by changing this situation," he said.

Research and development should be done for the industrial development of a country and it should start from schools and move towards universities while taking necessary steps to turn the research done in universities into products, the Minister added.

"The Industrial Development Board started School Entrepreneurship Circles in June 2023 at the Ministry. Currently, a group of 16,000 students from 400 schools are actively working in these school entrepreneurship circles," Minister Premajayantha said.

He said that the circulars for the establishment of entrepreneurship circles in schools are being issued.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Ms. Thilaka Jayasundara said that the successful programme implemented by the Industry Ministry aims to increase the percentage of entrepreneurship in Sri Lanka's workforce from 2.8% to 10% by 2030. As a result, the percentage of entrepreneurship has grown from 2.8% in 2023 to 3.2% in 2024.

This is a very positive trend, and to further support this progress, entrepreneurship development has been included in the school curriculum. Additionally, necessary steps are being taken to develop the human resources needed by the industries through the 12 professional skills institutes in Sri Lanka.

She added that when Sri Lanka's entrepreneurship rate grows to 10%, the country's per capita income is expected to triple.

Education is a big enterprise and inherently connected to the wealth of each nations as well as individuals… But our system of education is to memorize or copy from note books … so we need to follow innovative and creative teaching methods ….how could do it with the teams of teachers who are trained and educated in old style teaching and and learning ..:sorry to say except a few teachers in all fields many of our teachers are outdated teachers … Who are trained to teach only text book contents only … you can’t blame them as well … that is how they are trained and educated … without good teachers and academics you will never make any educational transformation ?? Now students are more clearer than their teachers with IT and digital knowledge..: Now .. Could you get good trained teachers across the country ? How do we do that ? Where do we do it ? Do our universities have any good teacher training education in all fields?

If you look carefully, our education system never produced the labour force that we require for our economy. Government needs to analyse the economy, demand for labour over next five to ten years then formulate education strategies based on this outlook rather wasting money on the brain drain. There’s no shame in looking up to other countries. Countries like Germany has a workforce excelled in advanced technology, Americans do well in Finance, Australians are excellent in Agriculture, Chinese in Mathematics and Japanese in artificial intelligence and robotics. What can we learn from their education systems. What can we integrate to ours?

A great leap to change and review was taken in the 70s ..pre-vocational subjects introduced ...aestheic studies and activity based learning in classrooms were highlighted .Kids eager to change challenged the teacher . .Then alas a new Minister from a conservative political party did a flip back to the traditional ....so the emphasis changed .I am sure a research into the annals of the dept .would reveal all this to this to the present Minister ... to plan for the future.a icomplete change in attitude is needed on what knowledge skills and attitudes are needed to carry our kids to the future and maintain a self reliant society . ....this was my experience of the introduction of NCGE of the late 70s ..it was not fool proof it needed constant review but not a flip back ...This is 2024 the focus needed is radical for knowledge is available and kids needed to be guided to learn how to learn ..based on our cultural values to move to the future with confidence of the smartest .

Anyo bung! I heard this when I was in school more than 20 years ago! we still have a premetive education system that fails to compete with the labour market both locally and internationally. When I did my OLs I had to do 8 subjects, of which all but 2 subjects have helped me along the way! English and Maths. They need to stream line the subjects and tailor make them to suit the current labour market. English, Maths, Science, commerce, IT and trade labour ( electeical, Plumbing and carpentry)should be the only compulsory subjects for O/Ls. Everything else should only be thought In junior high. For A/L you pick what you want to specialise in.

Politicians always say education system is outdated. This is always the case because the world is moving at a high speed and we are very slow in adapting. This is because we don't allow clever people in our education and university systems to survive. Either because of Political, economic and ethnic issues, bright lot have left and the remainder are useless average intelligent and no innovation and creativity to think afresh and work with dedication and commitment. Politicians are blamed 10 % for never solving problems but rather allowing it to remain or make it worse.
