Neglected rice storage facility in Marandagahamula worries locals

Colombo,December 31 (Daily Mirror) -The Marandagahamula paddy and rice storage complex constructed about ten years ago has been left to the mercy of the jungle, much to the anxiety of the traders and farmers.

The traders pointed out that people are using this storage facility's lanes as jogging tracts.

They said the rice and paddy storage complex equipped with weigh bridges has been left without any attention of the relevant authorities.

The traders request the government to refurbish and re-open it for the use and benefit of the business community and the farmers as well.

The result of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gota Rajapaksa and Rainl Rajapaksa rule. The paddy storage was integrated for obvious reasons. Now the NPP and to rectify this before the next paddy harvest.

The government should renovate the all paddy and rice storage centres located everywhere in order to facilitate and store the paddy and rice. Further necessary measures should be taken to purchase the paddy directly from the farmers who are cultivating the paddy. The farmers should be provided with the fertiliser subsidy and other relevant concessions. The rice monopoly should be eliminated from the country. The rice should be price controlled based on the varieties. The relentless rice mill owners who are selling the rice at the exorbitant prices should be prosecuted and black listed

Better convert it to a permanent Running Track or something useful. Reopening it will bring colossal loss to the Government. Like in any other Govt institutions where money transactions take place, officials will make it a thieves paradise. Buying all the stones, grit and wet paddy.

Identify the culprits who were responsible for this neglect, depriving storage of paddy bought from farmers. Lethargic attitude of officials were the main cause for neglect resulting in collosal loss to the statem. District development committees too are responsible.
